Backflow testing and repair

A backflow preventer stops irrigation water, fertilizer and lawn chemicals from being pulled back into drinking water. Many Front Range water providers require the device on sprinkler systems to be tested by a certified tester every year and the results submitted to the utility.

About backflow testing

Most irrigation systems here have a pressure vacuum breaker (PVB) or reduced pressure (RP) assembly where the sprinkler line leaves the house. Because they sit outside, they're vulnerable to freezing and are commonly damaged when a system isn't blown out before winter.

Testing is done with a calibrated gauge kit and takes little time when the device is working. Failed tests usually mean worn seals or springs that can be rebuilt.

Backflow testing questions

How often does a sprinkler backflow preventer need testing?

Many Colorado water providers require an annual test, usually at spring start-up. Check your provider's cross-connection program for exact deadlines.

Who can test a backflow preventer in Colorado?

A certified backflow tester. Water providers keep lists of testers whose results they accept.

What happens if my backflow test fails?

The device is usually rebuilt with new seals and springs, or replaced if the body is cracked, then retested and the passing result filed.

What is a pressure vacuum breaker?

A common backflow device for residential irrigation, installed above the highest sprinkler head, with test cocks for annual testing.

Why did my backflow preventer crack?

Water left in the device froze. Draining it after the fall blowout prevents most freeze damage.

Do I need a backflow preventer for my sprinkler system?

Yes. Plumbing codes and water providers require one on irrigation connections to protect drinking water.
