Hydro jetting

Hydro jetting cleans the full width of a drain pipe with high-pressure water, washing out grease, scale and fine roots that a cable only punches a hole through. It works best on sound pipe and is usually done after a camera inspection confirms the pipe can take it.

About hydro jetting

A cable clears a path. A jetter cleans the walls. For a kitchen line packed with grease, or a main line that clogs every few months, jetting can restore full flow and buy years between cleanings.

It isn't right for every pipe. Cracked clay, collapsed sections and badly corroded cast iron can be made worse, so a responsible plumber looks with a camera first.

Signs you need hydro jetting

  • The same drain clogs again within months of cabling
  • Grease buildup in a long kitchen drain run
  • Roots that return after every cabling
  • Slow main line drainage with no single hard clog
  • Preparing a line for a pipe lining

How the job usually goes

  1. 1

    Camera first

The pipe is inspected to confirm it's sound enough for jetting.

  2. 2

    Set up at a cleanout

The jetter hose goes in through an accessible cleanout.

  3. 3

    Jet the line

Rear-facing nozzles pull the hose forward while scouring the pipe walls.

  4. 4

    Camera after

A second look confirms the line is clean and shows any defects that were hidden.

What affects the cost

Every job is priced by the plumber after they see it. These are the things that move the price most. Ask for the price before work starts.

  • Length and diameter of the line
  • Cleanout access
  • Severity of grease or roots
  • Before and after camera inspection

Hydro jetting questions

Is hydro jetting safe for old pipes?

For sound pipe, yes. For cracked clay or thin cast iron, it can make damage worse. That's why a camera inspection should come first.

Does hydro jetting remove tree roots?

It cuts and flushes fine roots well. Heavy, woody root masses may need a cutting head first, and roots will regrow through a cracked joint until the joint is repaired.

How long does hydro jetting take?

A typical residential main line takes one to three hours including the camera inspection before and after.

Is hydro jetting better than snaking?

For grease and buildup, yes, because it cleans the full pipe wall. For a single hard blockage, a cable is often enough and costs less.

How often should a line be jetted?

Only when needed. Commercial kitchens jet on a schedule; most homes don't need it unless grease or roots keep returning.

Can hydro jetting damage pipes?

It can on cracked clay, Orangeburg or badly corroded cast iron. A camera inspection first shows whether the pipe can take it.
