Gas lines

Gas line repair and installation

If you smell gas, leave the house, then call your gas utility's emergency line or 911 from outside. Once the utility has made it safe, a licensed plumber repairs the leak or runs new gas lines, pulls the permit, and pressure tests the piping.

About gas line repair & installation

Natural gas in the Denver metro and much of Northern Colorado is delivered by Xcel Energy, with other utilities in some areas. Utilities respond to suspected leaks; plumbers repair and extend house piping beyond the meter.

New gas lines for ranges, dryers, fire pits, garage heaters and generators need correct sizing for the total load and a permit and inspection.

  1. 1

    Safety first

Suspected leaks are made safe by the gas utility before repair.

  2. 2

    Size and plan

The plumber calculates load and pipe size for every appliance on the line.

  3. 3

    Install and permit

Piping is installed, the permit pulled, and Colorado 811 called for any outdoor digging.

  4. 4

    Pressure test

The system is tested and inspected before appliances are connected.

What affects the cost

Every job is priced by the plumber after they see it. These are the things that move the price most. Ask for the price before work starts.

  • Length of run and number of appliances
  • Pipe material (black iron or CSST)
  • Indoor versus buried outdoor line
  • Meter or regulator upgrade by the utility
  • Permit and inspection

Gas line repair & installation questions

What should I do if I smell gas?

Don't switch lights or appliances on or off, and don't use a phone inside. Leave the building, then call your gas utility or 911 from a safe distance.

Can a plumber install a gas line for a fire pit or grill?

Yes. Buried gas lines must be sized for the load, installed at the right depth with approved pipe, permitted and inspected. Colorado 811 must be called before digging.

Do I need a permit for gas line work in Colorado?

Yes, in almost every jurisdiction. Gas piping is pressure tested and inspected before appliances are connected.

What is CSST gas pipe?

Corrugated stainless steel tubing, a flexible gas pipe with a yellow or black jacket. It must be installed and bonded to the electrical system per the manufacturer and code.

How do I know my gas line is big enough for a new appliance?

The plumber adds up the BTU load of every appliance and sizes pipe by length and pressure. Tankless water heaters often need a larger line.

Who fixes a gas leak outside at the meter?

The gas utility handles leaks at the meter and on its side. House piping beyond the meter is repaired by a licensed plumber.
