FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How Thawline works, Colorado permit and licensing basics, and the plumbing questions Front Range homeowners ask most.
Using Thawline
How does Thawline work?
You call or send a request, and you're connected with an independent, licensed plumbing company that serves your ZIP code. Thawline Plumbing is a free referral service. Calls and requests are connected to independent, licensed plumbing companies that serve your area; those companies quote, perform and warrant the work. Thawline does not perform plumbing work itself.
Does it cost anything to use Thawline?
No. Calling and submitting a request are free. You only pay the plumbing company for work you approve, at the price you agree with them.
Which areas are covered?
The Denver metro, Boulder County and Northern Colorado, including Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, Arvada, Westminster, Thornton, Broomfield, Littleton, Centennial, Highlands Ranch, Parker, Castle Rock, Golden, Boulder, Longmont, Fort Collins, Loveland and Greeley. Enter your ZIP code to check.
Are the plumbers licensed?
Plumbers must hold a Colorado plumbing license from the State Plumbing Board to do plumbing work. You can verify any plumber's license on the DORA website, and you should ask for the license number before work starts.
Will I get a price before work starts?
Ask for one. The plumber should explain what's wrong and agree on a price or a clear pricing method before starting. Thawline doesn't set prices.
What should I do in a plumbing emergency?
Shut off the main water valve first, then call. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside before calling anyone else.
What happens to my information when I submit a request?
It is shared with up to three plumbing companies that serve your area so they can contact you about your request. See the privacy policy for details.
Colorado rules
How do I check a plumber's license in Colorado?
Use the license lookup on the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) website. Search by name or license number to confirm the license type and status.
Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in Colorado?
In most Front Range jurisdictions, yes. The permit leads to an inspection of venting, gas piping and the relief valve.
When should I winterize outdoor plumbing in Colorado?
Before the first hard freeze, which on the Front Range often comes in October. Disconnect hoses, have the sprinkler system blown out, and protect any outdoor backflow preventer.
Common plumbing questions
Where is my main water shutoff?
In most Colorado homes it is in the basement or crawl space on the wall facing the street, where the water line enters, usually next to the meter. Some newer homes have it in a utility closet near the water heater.
Should I drip my faucets in a Colorado cold snap?
Yes, for faucets on exterior walls. A slow drip relieves pressure and keeps water moving. Open both hot and cold on single-handle faucets, and open the cabinet doors underneath.
Should I get a sewer scope before buying a house in Denver?
For homes built before about 1980, or any home with large trees in the front yard, it's widely recommended. A scope can show root intrusion or a broken line that a standard home inspection won't catch.
How long do water heaters last in Colorado?
Tank heaters commonly last around 8 to 12 years. Sediment, water pressure, and whether the anode rod was ever replaced all affect lifespan. Tankless units often last longer with regular descaling.
How do I check my meter for a leak?
Turn off every faucet, appliance and irrigation zone. Find the meter (often in a pit near the street in Colorado, or in the basement), lift the lid and watch the small leak indicator. If it turns, water is moving somewhere.
Do I need to disconnect hoses in Colorado winters?
Yes. Disconnect hoses before the first hard freeze, often in October on the Front Range, even on frost-free hose bibs. A connected hose traps water in the stem and lets it freeze.
