Gas line services

If you smell gas, leave the house first and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Once the utility has made it safe, a licensed plumber repairs the leak, pressure tests the line, and handles new gas lines for ranges, dryers, water heaters, fireplaces and outdoor kitchens.

Gas lines services

How gas lines problems start

Gas piping inside a home is usually black steel, flexible corrugated stainless steel (CSST) or, in older homes, galvanized pipe. Leaks tend to happen at fittings, appliance connectors and corroded sections.

Gas work almost always needs a permit and a pressure test before the gas is turned back on. Larger appliances like tankless water heaters often need a bigger line than the one already there, which is why gas line sizing comes up during water heater upgrades.

The gas line service page covers leaks, new lines and appliance hookups.

When to call a plumber

  • A rotten-egg smell near appliances or outside: leave first, then call the gas utility
  • Hissing near a gas line or meter
  • A new range, dryer, fireplace or grill that needs a gas line
  • Upgrading to a tankless water heater or larger appliance
  • A failed pressure test or a utility shut-off notice

Choosing the right fix

Utility or plumber?

The gas utility handles emergencies and the meter. Everything on the house side of the meter, including repairs and new lines, is work for a licensed plumber or gas fitter.

Line size matters

Adding an appliance can overload an existing line, which causes weak flames or appliance errors. A plumber calculates the total load before extending or upsizing the line.

CSST bonding

Flexible CSST gas line needs to be bonded to the home's electrical grounding system to reduce lightning damage risk. Older installs may be missing this.

Gas lines questions

What should I do if I smell gas?

Don't switch lights or appliances on or off, and don't use your phone inside. Leave the house, then call the gas utility's emergency number or 911 from outside.

Do I need a permit to add a gas line?

In nearly every jurisdiction, yes. The line is pressure tested and inspected before gas is turned on.

Can a plumber install a gas line for my stove?

Yes. Licensed plumbers routinely run gas lines for ranges, dryers, water heaters, fireplaces and outdoor grills, and pull the permit for the work.
